The Power of Ownership: How to Build a Career and a Business is a book about building one’s career and business while remaining honest and always treating people the way you would want to be treated. And that honesty and integrity are the only policies in life and in business.

It talks about how always doing the best job possible serves both your company or client and most importantly, YOU.

It follows John’s career and the lessons he learned from the beginning through retirement in 2012 including the establishment of his own company, John Bailey & Associates Public Relations (JB&A) in 1996. The path follows helping to grow Stroh’s beer from a small regional beer with two brands in eleven states in 1975 to third largest behind Anheuser-Busch and Miller with distribution of 22 brands of beer in 50 states in 1985.

In 1989 through 1992, he helped educate the American public through a nationwide public relations campaign to wear safety belts in autos, seeing belt usage increase from about 10 percent in 1984 to more than 70 percent nationally in 1992. In the early 2000s, he and JB&A also helped develop and execute a public relations campaign to eliminate smoking in public places in Michigan.

Told he was too old at age 57 to start his own business he did so anyhow and he and his associates built JB&A into one of the most respected and largest public relations firms in Michigan. Because of this, John and JB&A were recognized by President George W. Bush in a 2005 speech.

In the book Bailey talks about how important setting goals are in a career and business and how important building a network and keeping the network alive and growing is to the success of building a career and beginning, maintaining and growing a business. The book also looks at the public relations leaders in the Detroit area from 1970 through 2012.

Bailey sold JB&A in 2009 to Lambert, Edwards & Associates Public Relations – Investor Relations and retired from the company in 2012. He enjoys writing, reading, promoting ethics in life and in business and golfing.
